US Secretary of State Marco Rubio commenced a four-day visit to India on Saturday, focusing on enhancing strategic partnerships and expanding areas of cooperation in trade, defense, energy, and technology. The visit underscores the importance of bilateral ties as Rubio prepares for discussions with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi. Coinciding with the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue involving India, the United States, Japan, and Australia, the visit aims to address several pivotal issues.

Key discussions are anticipated to revolve around Indo-Pacific security concerns, particularly in light of China’s increasing influence in the region. Additionally, defense collaboration, advancements in critical technologies, and the establishment of resilient supply chains will be on the agenda, with particular emphasis on semiconductors and artificial intelligence. The talks are set against a backdrop of evolving global dynamics that necessitate stronger alliances.

Trade relations are expected to be a significant focus, especially following past tensions linked to tariff measures imposed by President Donald Trump on Indian exports. Both nations will explore opportunities to enhance economic cooperation and reduce existing trade friction. The aim is to find common ground that benefits both economies and fosters a sustainable trade partnership.

Energy security remains a crucial topic, with the United States eager to increase its exports of crude oil and LNG to India, even as India continues to purchase discounted oil from Russia. This aspect of the discussions highlights the broader energy strategies both countries are adapting to meet their long-term goals.

Defense cooperation is a cornerstone of the bilateral discussions, as India currently utilizes several US-made defense platforms, including Boeing P-8 Poseidon aircraft and MQ-9B SkyGuardian drones. The talks are expected to explore potential joint production and collaboration in advanced defense and space technologies. During his visit, Rubio is also scheduled to travel to Kolkata, Agra, Jaipur, and Delhi, with a stop at the Missionaries of Charity headquarters in Kolkata, founded by Mother Teresa.
