US and India Near Finalizing Trade Agreement, Says Secretary of State Rubio

by admin477351

The United States is nearing the finalization of a trade agreement with India, according to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Speaking in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, Rubio highlighted that the ongoing negotiations are influencing decisions regarding national security waivers tied to Russian energy sanctions. Rubio’s comments come ahead of his scheduled visit to India, where he plans to meet with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar in Mumbai.

Rubio also addressed the US’s temporary waivers on certain Russian energy sanctions. He cited the high global energy prices and challenges countries face in finding alternative suppliers as reasons for this decision. Rubio acknowledged that geographical constraints make it difficult for nations to quickly diversify their energy imports, a situation that affects India significantly, as it remains a major purchaser of Russian energy.

The provisional nature of these waivers means that the sanctions could be reinstated, leaving the door open for future enforcement by the US administration. Rubio emphasized that the transition from one energy source to another cannot be achieved overnight, reflecting the complexities involved in reshaping energy dependencies.

In parallel, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal announced that the first tranche of the bilateral trade agreement between India and the US has been finalized and is currently undergoing legal drafting. Both nations are working towards completing this process to operationalize the agreement.
