Trump Announces Ukraine-Russia Energy Ceasefire, Zelenskyy Denies Agreement

by admin477351

US President Donald Trump has announced a ceasefire agreement between Russia and Ukraine concerning attacks on energy infrastructure. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that he was not informed of such an agreement and would only consider compliance if Russia ceases its attacks as well. The ceasefire details, including its start date and implementation plan, remain unspecified by Trump, who made the announcement via social media.

The announcement comes amid tensions between Washington and Kyiv over Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries. Trump has urged Ukraine to halt these attacks, while Zelenskyy insists that Moscow must first stop targeting Ukrainian energy facilities. Zelenskyy calls for reciprocal commitments and security guarantees to ensure Russia’s adherence to any ceasefire agreement.

Despite Trump’s announcement, Zelenskyy reports continued Russian drone and airstrikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including a thermal power station in Kharkiv, and repeated attacks on gas and oil facilities across the country. This ongoing aggression highlights the Ukrainian leader’s demand for a ceasefire that applies equally to both sides.

The situation escalated further when Trump proposed easing sanctions on Russian diesel exports, arguing it could lower fuel prices ahead of the US midterm elections. Zelenskyy criticized this decision, warning that increased revenue could bolster Russia’s war efforts. In response, Trump criticized Zelenskyy for not making concessions, suggesting that Ukraine might need new leadership. Zelenskyy countered that leadership decisions should be made by the Ukrainian people, stating he would consider elections only if Russia agrees to a comprehensive 60-day ceasefire.

The proposed ceasefire has stirred concerns among Ukrainian officials and European allies regarding Washington’s strategy to end the conflict. Reports suggest that the US might leverage military procurement arrangements and economic incentives to pressure Kyiv and Moscow into accepting a ceasefire.

Ukraine continues to assert that its strikes on Russian oil facilities are aimed at undermining Moscow’s war financing. Meanwhile, Russia’s persistent bombardment of Ukrainian cities and infrastructure has reinforced Kyiv’s demands for an equitable ceasefire agreement. Zelenskyy is engaged in discussions with European and international leaders to bolster support for Ukraine, with several European officials emphasizing the importance of maintaining pressure on Russia for an immediate cessation of attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

The viability of the proposed ceasefire remains uncertain, with no clear confirmation from Russia regarding its commitment to the terms. This disagreement underscores the growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over the conditions necessary to end the war and the security guarantees required to achieve lasting peace.
