Carmel-by-the-Sea is gearing up to celebrate a significant milestone with the 100th anniversary of Sunset School at the Sunset Center on October 25, 2026. This free community event, running from 1 to 4 p.m., will kick off the “Century of Creativity | 1926–2031” festivities, a five-year celebration leading up to the centenary of the Sunset Center’s historic theater auditorium in 2031. The occasion promises a vibrant mix of live performances, visual art, historical exhibits, oral histories, and family-friendly activities, spotlighting the cultural significance of this landmark.
Attendees can look forward to performances by notable local groups such as the Carmel Bach Festival, Monterey Symphony, Carmel Music Society, Chamber Music Monterey Bay, Youth Music Monterey, Carmel High School Chamber Singers, and the Monterey Peninsula Ballet Theatre/TDC. These performances will be staged in the 718-seat historic theater and on the outdoor terrace between 1:30 and 3:30 p.m., providing a rich cultural experience for all ages.
A community art project, the Sunset Legacy Wall, will invite visitors to share their artwork, memories, and messages reflecting on the Sunset Center’s role in the community. Additional engaging activities include rock painting for families and children, live art and music presentations, photography programs, and guided tours of the storied campus. An archival exhibition will also be on display, chronicling the transformation of Sunset Center from a school campus into a renowned regional cultural hub.
Several local organizations will join in the celebration, including the Carmel Heritage Society, Harrison Memorial Library, The Carmel Foundation, Carmel Youth Center, Carmel Residents Association, and Carmel Woman’s Club. Complimentary refreshments will be available, with additional food and beverages offered for purchase through Sunset Center concessions. This event marks the beginning of a commemorative journey that will celebrate the center’s enduring legacy and its deep connection with the Monterey Peninsula community through 2031.
