The U.S. Department of Energy has given the green light to the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy’s energy storage project, marking a significant step forward for renewable energy efforts in Traverse City, Michigan. The project, backed by Michigan-based Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC), will integrate a 1.15 MW battery energy storage system with an existing 185 kW solar photovoltaic system at the conservancy’s headquarters.
This initiative, supported through Congressionally Directed Spending, is set to enhance energy resilience by storing electricity generated by the solar array, making it available as needed. The storage system will utilize ABC’s proprietary GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology, which is housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BE™ enclosures. Notably, this technology is designed to use significantly less lead compared to traditional lead batteries, maintaining both safety and recyclability.
ABC’s GreenSeal® batteries are developed and manufactured in Michigan, underscoring the state’s contribution to the domestic energy storage supply chain. With final funding secured, the project has now moved into the procurement and manufacturing stage. Installation and commissioning are slated for completion by the second quarter of 2027, according to ABC.
The project represents a collaborative effort between various stakeholders to leverage renewable energy sources effectively. By combining solar power with advanced battery storage, the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy aims to enhance its energy efficiency and sustainability practices. This development highlights the growing trend of integrating innovative storage solutions with renewable energy systems to achieve greater environmental benefits.
