President Donald Trump is preparing to unveil a significant initiative in nuclear energy, highlighting a plan to allocate $17.5 billion in low-interest federal loans aimed at the deployment of Westinghouse AP1000 nuclear reactors throughout the United States. This funding, facilitated by the US Department of Energy, is intended to finance the acquisition of essential equipment for up to ten AP1000 reactors, spread across five projects, each comprising two reactors. The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to bolster domestic energy production and address the rapidly increasing electricity demand driven by artificial intelligence data centers and expanding industrial activities.
The initiative has garnered interest from seven utility companies, which have reportedly expressed their intent to participate by signing letters of intent. The loans are expected to primarily support the early bulk procurement of specialized reactor components, a move designed to stabilize supply chains and reduce project costs. The Trump administration believes that this financing mechanism could potentially reduce construction timelines by as much as three years. If the projects gain approval and adhere to the proposed schedule, the reactors could become operational by 2035.
This initiative is a component of a larger $80 billion nuclear expansion project that involves Westinghouse Electric Company, Cameco, and Brookfield Asset Management. The collaborative effort aims to initiate construction of approximately ten new reactors, beginning in 2026. To avoid the financial pitfalls that plagued previous projects such as the Vogtle Nuclear Plant in Georgia, where costs escalated from an estimated $14 billion to over $30 billion, Westinghouse plans to implement standardized reactor designs and fixed-price contracts.
The project will primarily focus on Westinghouse’s AP1000 pressurized water reactors and the AP300 small modular reactor design. The AP1000 technology is currently in operation at the Vogtle facility, which marked the introduction of the first new US nuclear reactors in decades during 2023 and 2024. The administration regards nuclear power as a crucial element in ensuring future energy security, with nuclear sources currently accounting for approximately 20% of the nation’s electricity. The planned expansion aims to enhance reliable, carbon-free power generation while fostering economic growth and technological advancement.
