President Donald Trump has announced the development of a new $15 billion steel plant in eastern Iowa, declaring it to be the largest of its kind in American history. The facility, spearheaded by Mesabi Metallics, a subsidiary of India-based Essar Group, is set to commence production in 2030 following its initial construction phase.
The ambitious project is designed to utilize iron ore from Mesabi Metallics’ mine located in Minnesota, with the goal of producing high-quality steel for the U.S. market. The plant promises significant economic benefits, including the creation of up to 6,000 construction jobs and nearly 2,000 manufacturing and mining positions.
Financial backing for the project includes substantial federal support, notably up to $10 billion in financing from the U.S. Export-Import Bank. Rewant Ruia, chairman of Mesabi Metallics, emphasized that most critical materials would be sourced domestically, although some specialized imports may be necessary.
During the announcement, President Trump attributed the decision to invest in domestic manufacturing to his administration’s tariffs on imported goods. This development surfaces as Iowa gears up for the 2026 Senate election, where industrial investment and job creation are likely to be pivotal political topics.
