California and New York have launched legal actions against the Trump administration’s decision to buy back offshore wind leases and halt renewable energy projects. The states argue that this move could hinder clean-energy development and lead to increased electricity costs.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta has filed a lawsuit concerning the cancellation of an offshore wind project by Invenergy, planned off the state’s coast. This comes in response to the federal government’s announcement of plans to repurchase leases for four offshore wind projects along the US East and West coasts.
Meanwhile, New York Attorney General Letitia James spearheaded a coalition of states in a lawsuit against agreements involving Invenergy and Bluepoint Wind. These agreements would offer payments to energy companies in exchange for terminating ongoing offshore wind projects.
The Trump administration has pledged billions of dollars to encourage companies to abandon renewable energy initiatives. The Interior Department supports the buyback agreements, suggesting that companies are now focusing investments on more reliable energy sources, including fossil fuels.
James criticized the agreements as unlawful, emphasizing that canceling wind projects could exacerbate challenges in meeting growing electricity demands. Bonta echoed these concerns, asserting that California remains committed to pursuing clean-energy projects despite federal policy shifts.
