US representatives Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff engaged in discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Sunday, aiming to make headway in resolving the ongoing conflict with Russia. This meeting followed their earlier engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Witkoff characterized the talks with Zelenskyy as “very constructive and substantive,” expressing optimism about the possibility of broader negotiations involving the United States, Ukraine, and European nations in the near future.
Additionally, national security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany briefly participated in the discussions in Kyiv. President Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s desire to initiate trilateral talks with the US and European partners to further peace negotiations. He also highlighted the necessity for sustained Western support as Ukraine braces for a challenging winter, underscoring the importance of air defense, energy assistance, and increased shipments of US liquefied natural gas.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, peace negotiations remain at an impasse, largely due to deep-seated disagreements concerning territorial control in eastern Ukraine. Previous dialogue has revolved around a 20-point peace plan crafted by Washington and Kyiv, yet key issues remain unresolved between Russia and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, the conflict continues to take a toll on Ukraine, with Russian strikes causing casualties and damage. Ukrainian authorities reported at least eight fatalities and 69 injuries across the country in the past day. Kyiv has been subjected to persistent drone attacks, and there is a pressing shortage of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles to defend against these threats.
As the conflict nears its fifth year, Ukrainian officials remain apprehensive about potential Russian assaults on energy infrastructure and the likelihood of increased strikes during the winter months.
