Amazon’s Ring is set to debut its Neighbours community app in the UK on October 21, marking an expansion of its neighborhood-focused platform beyond the U.S. borders. While the app offers UK residents a place to share local safety updates and community information, it arrives amid ongoing privacy concerns linked to Ring’s operations in the United States.
The Neighbours app will be integrated into the existing Ring app, providing users the ability to engage with their community without needing to own a Ring device. Users can set a specific radius, ranging from 0.1 to five miles, for their neighborhood interactions. The platform aims to offer a more streamlined alternative to larger neighborhood communication groups found on platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook.
In an effort to moderate the content, posts will be categorized and reviewed by both artificial intelligence and human moderators. The service will enforce guidelines that prohibit illegal content, discrimination, speculation, and other inappropriate materials. However, some features available to U.S. users, such as local alerts from organizations and the ability for police to request camera footage, will not be part of the initial UK rollout. Ring is considering introducing these features in the UK in the future.
Privacy concerns have been a significant issue for Ring, especially in the U.S. where the company’s collaboration with law enforcement agencies over camera footage has raised alarms. In response, Ring has implemented measures to enhance user control over video access. The company recently introduced a default encryption system called TAKE, which uses time-limited keys to secure camera recordings.
Additionally, Ring will introduce a feature called Search Party for Dogs in the UK, allowing users to report missing pets. Ring camera owners with the appropriate cloud subscriptions can opt-in to receive alerts if their devices detect a missing animal and can choose to share the footage with the pet owner.
Amazon’s acquisition of Ring in 2018 signaled its move into the smart-home security sector, though the company has faced scrutiny over its handling of privacy and data security. As Ring’s Neighbours app launches in the UK, these concerns continue to shadow its expansion efforts.
