The Pentagon has identified two soldiers killed in a strike on the Muwaffaq Salti air base in Jordan: First Lieutenant Tyler James Feehan, 25, from Hawaii, and Private Isabella Gonzales, 19, from Texas. Additionally, a third service member died in northern Iraq during the controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance, while authorities are investigating the remains of a possible fourth victim found in Jordan. The escalating situation has raised alarms about increasing casualties and the threat of a wider regional conflict.
The latest fatalities occurred amid a continuous series of US strikes against Iranian targets, marking the tenth consecutive wave. In response, Iran has vowed to retaliate against regional allies supporting American military actions. Democratic lawmakers have been vocal in their criticism of Trump’s approach to the conflict. Senator Chris Murphy highlighted the rapidly deteriorating situation, while House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries condemned the military campaign as an unnecessary and costly war endangering American troops.
Several Democrats, including Senators Mark Warner and Chris Van Hollen, have called for an immediate cessation of hostilities and are pressing the administration to seek congressional approval for any further military actions. Senator Jeanne Shaheen has also advocated for renewed diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis. Congress has already passed war powers resolutions designed to limit the president’s authority to continue military operations without legislative approval. However, the White House maintains that the legal requirement for congressional authorization has not been met due to an earlier ceasefire period.
The conflict, which reignited earlier this year, has resulted in at least 17 US military deaths, with Iranian civilian casualties estimated to exceed 1,700. Despite mounting criticism from Democrats, Republican leaders continue to support Trump’s response, arguing that military action is necessary to counter Iranian threats and protect US interests in the region. They have also warned that the situation could escalate into a broader regional confrontation.
