Under President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico is revitalizing its security collaboration with the United States, marking a significant departure from the previous administration led by Andrés Manuel López Obrador. Omar García Harfuch, who coordinates the Security Cabinet, has become a pivotal figure in this renewed alliance. He has conducted multiple meetings with top U.S. officials, focusing on intelligence sharing and combating organized crime. This enhanced cooperation has led to quicker responses from Mexican authorities to criminal activities, thanks to faster information exchange.
Since Sheinbaum took office, Mexican authorities have reported substantial achievements, including tens of thousands of arrests, major weapon and drug seizures, and the dismantling of thousands of clandestine drug labs. Additionally, the pace at which high-profile criminal suspects are being extradited to the U.S. has increased, and there has been a notable reduction in fentanyl trafficking. This shift contrasts sharply with the López Obrador era, which was characterized by the closure of a U.S. intelligence unit in Mexico and stricter regulations on foreign security agents.
The deterioration of bilateral relations during López Obrador’s tenure was further exacerbated by the 2020 arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos and disagreements over organized crime investigations. Tensions reached a peak in 2024 following allegations that drug money had been linked to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign. Although these allegations did not lead to formal charges, they further eroded trust between the Mexican government and U.S. authorities.
Despite the progress in cooperation, President Sheinbaum has consistently emphasized the importance of Mexico’s sovereignty and the necessity for mutual respect in the partnership. Her administration has also voiced concerns over perceived attempts by U.S. officials to influence or divide Mexico’s security leadership. Consequently, while both nations strive for better coordination in the fight against organized crime, Mexico remains firm that intelligence cooperation must align with its sovereignty and national interests.
