According to Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, the coin is crafted to honor the enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism in America. Bessent emphasized that it highlights the nation’s foundational values and its steadfast commitment to freedom. On the front, the coin showcases a portrait of Trump with the inscription “LIBERTY,” the years “1776–2026,” and the phrase “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The reverse side features the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States alongside the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
The announcement has sparked controversy due to a longstanding federal law that typically prohibits living presidents from being depicted on U.S. currency. Despite this, Treasury officials assert that the secretary possesses the authority to approve specific commemorative coin issues under certain circumstances.
While some have criticized the decision to include a living former president on the coin, officials from the Treasury Department stand by the move as a lawful and fitting tribute to commemorate a significant milestone in American history.
