Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has responded to criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Mexico’s efforts to tackle drug trafficking and organized crime. At a morning press conference, Sheinbaum emphasized that Mexico is aware of its challenges and is actively addressing them, asserting that the country does not require external judgment.
Sheinbaum highlighted the shared responsibilities between Mexico and the United States in combating issues like drug trafficking, money laundering, and the illegal flow of arms. She questioned the measures the U.S. is taking to address these problems, including prosecuting drug traffickers and curbing the illegal flow of firearms into Mexico. Furthermore, she urged the U.S. to intensify efforts against opioid consumption and addiction within its borders.
While acknowledging the seriousness of drug production and trafficking in Mexico, Sheinbaum pointed out that the illegal flow of firearms from the United States enables criminal organizations operating in Mexico. Sheinbaum defended her administration’s record, citing prosecutions and arrests of officials allegedly linked to criminal organizations, regardless of political ties, under initiatives like Operation Swarm.
President Trump has urged Mexico to take more decisive action against officials allegedly connected to drug cartels and organized crime, noting the arrests and prosecutions already conducted by the Mexican government. His administration has demanded further measures to combat corruption.
Calling for transparency, Sheinbaum concluded by stressing the need for both nations to examine their responsibilities in addressing the cross-border drug crisis, particularly in tackling fentanyl trafficking and domestic drug consumption in the U.S.
