Washington’s ceasefire proposal spans 15 provisions and includes significant incentives for Iran to choose the right path, among them sanctions relief, a nuclear rollback, missile limitations, and the restoration of open access to the Strait of Hormuz. The Strait of Hormuz is a critically important global energy route, channeling roughly a fifth of world oil. Iran’s rejection of the plan has been the defining obstacle to taking the right fork in the diplomatic road.
Tehran has publicly articulated its own competing conditions through state media, including demands for protection of its officials from targeted strikes, formal no-war assurances, war damage reparations, and internationally recognized sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.
